(4 Jan 1923, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): J. R. SMITH DIES SUDDENLY J. R. Smith who lived on a farm eight miles southwest of Elk City, on the Postal Highway, was working Monday morning, January 1st, with a team and wagon, hauling fertilizer and spreading it on his garden. A little later it was noticed that his team was standing at a fence, and nothing seen of Mr. Smith. His wife walked out in the yard and saw him lying on the ground and by that time his sons came up. A doctor was called but life was extinct, caused from heart failure. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon by Rev. DeVore, and body which had been prepared by Grubitz & Son was shipped to their old home in Paducah, Texas for burial. Mr. Smith was seventy-one years old and was well respected by all who knew him. The aged wife and children have the deepest sympathy of all in their sad hour. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
