(Sep 1914, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): AMOS FINDLAY SMOTHERMAN On the morning of Sept. 7, at 6:15 at an hour when he had so often started out to his earthly labors, Amos F. Smotherman, a faithful servant of God was called home to rest. Born Sept. 23, 1860 in Tenn., he was brought to Texas in early life, he migrated to Okla. in 1887 and in 1889 was converted and joined with the M. E. Church South, being a devout Bible student, he soon felt that God called him to preach, his educational advantages being meager, contented himself with being an exhorter for six years. Then in simple service and in unassuming piety he continued to serve God until the end. Being exceptionally large in physique, he possessed a proportionate largeness of heart. He loved everybody and peculiar was the nature that could not love him. His love for God and the principles of the Christian religion were so controlling that he was often seen in public and in private upholding Jesus Christ and his religion in the face of skeptics and infidels. His life lived in the humble walks is another splendid example of Him who wore the thorns upon his brow. He is survived by wife, two daughters and five sons. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
