SMOTHERMAN Mrs. A. F. Smotherman died Sunday, December 25th at her home southeast of Grimes, after a short illness caused from blood poisoning. Her condition was not considered dangerous and her sudden death was a shock to relatives and friends. She was 63 years, 1 month and 12 days old. Funeral services were held at the Fairlawn cemetery in Elk City Wednesday afternoon where interment was made by the side of her husband who died here seven years ago. Rev. Hefley had charge of the services in absence of Rev. Devore, pastor of the M. E. Church South. Nancy Mariah Poarch was born in Tennessee, Nov. 13, 1858. She was married to Amos F. Smotherman in Dallas County, Texas, July 13, 1881. To this union five sons and two daughters were born. The husband died in September, 1914, and a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Burgess, died Oct. 14, 1918. When Mrs. Smotherman was a girl twelve years of age she was converted and joined the M. E. Church South and remained a member until her death ever living a true christian life. She was a devoted mother and a kind neighbor and friend. She was looking after and caring for her little grandson, Francis Burgess, whose mother died when he was but a small baby, and he will deeply feel the loss of his precious grandmother. Mrs. Smotherman came to Oklahoma in 1889. For a number of years the family lived at Elk City, then moved near Sayre and 3 years ago moved to the place near Grimes where she lived to the time of her death. She is survived by her father, C. T. Poarch of Carter, four brothers, J. E. and W. D. Poarch of Sayre, K. Poarch of Erick and J. F. Poarch of Dallas, Texas. The children left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother are Rev. Hugh Smotherman of Wildorado, Texas; Charles Smotherman of Elk City; Marvin Smotherman of Los Anemas, Colo.; J. H. and F. H. Smotherman who lived on the home place and Mrs. Grace Perkins living south of Elk City. All were present at the funeral services.
