LEE STALEY Sarah Louise Staley was born in Tarrant county, Texas, August 27th, 1875, and departed from this life May 18th, 1923, at Elk City, Okla. In 1892 Sarah Hedges, for that was her maiden name, was married to Mr. James Flanigan. To this union were born three boys, one Arthur Clevanas who died when fourteen years of age, another, James, who died in France being killed in action at Argonne Forrest, and I. L. Flanigan of Elk City, who is the only surviving member of the family. The husband and father died when the children were in their infancy. In 1898 Mrs. Flanigan was united in marriage to Mr. Lee Staley. To this union were born ten children, eight boys and two girls. Two of these children preceded their mother into eternity. Mrs. Staley became a christian when she was sixteen years of age and according to the abundant testimony of loved ones and friends she lived a consistent christian life. Her cheery word and patient endurance and helpful influence shall be sadly missed by her husband and children as well as by many other relatives and friends. She was among the early pioneers of this community and endured all the hardships and privations that belonged to every settler in early day. Her cup of sorrow had often been filled with bereavement, yet she kept the faith and eternity alone will reveal the good she has done as a loving companion, mother, neighbor and christian. Her last illness continued several months and refused to yield to medical skill and loving treatment growing constantly worse until her spirit winged its way to its heavenly abode. She ever bore her sufferings with christian fortitude. The funeral services were held at the Christian church Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. Lemmex where friends gathered to pay their last respects. The members of choir sang several songs she had loved, and after a comforting talk by Rev. Lemmex the body was taken to Berlin (Roger Mills County) by Grubitz & Son to be laid beside her son, Arthur. Many friends from around Berlin were present at the interment, and offered deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
