(10 Aug 1910, Wednesday, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): David M. Stearns was born in LaChute, Canada, March 27, 1849, was married March 18, 1873 to Miss Jane Lester, to this union were born seven children, five sons and two daughters, one son and one daughter died some time ago. From Canada they moved to northern Nebraska where they spent 32 years, moving to Canute about eight years ago. Mr. Stearns and his wife united with the M. E. Church in 1883 and lived consistant christian lives. Mrs. Stearns died January 27, 1908. Mr. Stearns was again married in October 1909 to Mrs. Stella Baker who survives him. He was taken sick several months ago with an acute stomach trouble he tried the water at Granite which only seemed to aggravate the case, from there he went to the Sanitarium at Geary but the physician pronounced his case incurable and he was brought home, where everything was done to make him as comfortable as possible, he gradually grew weaker up to the time of his death August 8. He leaves besides his wife an aged mother in Canada, four daughters, one son, four brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held at the home, August 10, at 2 o'clock conducted by his pastor, Rev. F. A. Gaupp, assisted by Ben M. Edwards, pastor of the Christian Church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Canute cemetery (Washita County) by the Odd Fellows of which he was a member. Mr. Stearns was a man of irreproachable character and a citizen worthy of the esteem in which he was held throughout this portion of Oklahoma. He owned one of the best farms in the state and by his excellent business qualities became one of the states most prosperous citizens. (11 Aug 1910, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): AN OLD-SETTLER DIED AT CANUTE The news comes from Canute of the death of D. M. Stearns, of that place, which sad event occurred on Monday. The interment took place Wednesday. A number of Elk City people attended the funeral. Deceased was an old settler, and had acquired a large circle of friends who mourn his death.
