(27 Feb 1919, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): In Memoriam. Mrs. Martha J. Steele passed away on Friday, February 21st, 1919, at the home of her niece, Mrs. J. H. Forsyth, this date, being her 80th birthday. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Posey, pastor of the Presbyterian church on Sunday afternoon at the home, and burial at Fairlawn cemetery. Many sorrowing friends followed the remains of this dearly beloved woman to her last resting place. Mr. and Mrs. Forsyth and son, Clinton, being the only relatives present. The many beautiful flowers, sweet songs and heartfelt sympathy manifested all united in expressing the high esteem felt for "Aunt Matt," as those who knew her best affectionately called her. Mrs. Martha J. Mann was born in Chester, Ill., and was the last of a family of seven brothers and sisters to pass away. At an early age she united with the Presbyterian church and lived a beautiful, consistent christian life, living for those whom she devotedly loved. At the age of forty she was married to Marion E. Steele, of Steelville, Ill., who preceded her home. In 1910 she came to make her home with her niece, Mrs. John Forsyth, of Elk City, Okla., where she has received the loving and tender care necessary in her advanced age. We shall miss her cheery presence and ever feel that her noble unselfish life was an inspiration and example to be emulated by all. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
