(25 May 1906, Roger Mills Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): On the 21st day of May 1906, Mrs. S. A. Stephens crossed over the boundary that divides this life from the unknown beyond. Grandma, as she was called by her many friends, was born in Kentucky on the 15th day of December, 1829. Her husband died soon after the close of the civil war, leaving a family of seven children dependent upon her. One son died in his young manhood, and only four of her six living children she left behind were here to go with her to her last resting place. One daughter living in St. Louis and another in Memphis, were too far away to get here to see for the last time their cherished mother. After leaving Kentucky, she resided a number of years near Mobeetie, Texas, but the last twelve years of her life was spent with her son, E. F. Stephens, in Cheyenne, and no mother ever had a more devoted and loyal son than he, for he was the staff of her declining years and made her home restfully content. Grandma had been a consistent member of the M. E. church, south, for a number of years, and her greatest delight was found in attending church service. She was a invalid for several years before her death, but not confined to her bed all the time. (25 May 1906, Cheyenne Sunbeam, Cheyenne, Roger Mills Co, OK): Death of Mrs. S. A. Stephens Mrs. Sarah A. Stephens, well known as Grandma Stephens, died Monday night at 12 o'clock at the home of her son E. F. Stephens in this place. Mrs. Stephens was a native of Kentucky, and resided in Texas a number of years. She was 77 years of age at time of her death. She was a Methodist, having been a member of the church from early girlhood, and was much respected in Cheyenne where she had resided for the past 14 years. She was buried Wednesday in the Cheyenne cemetery. Thanks We, the bereaved children and grandchildren of Mrs. S. A. Stephens, tender our heartfelt gratitude to the kind friends here. May God bless you all E. F. Stephens, Leonard Stephens, Minerva Simpson, Robbie Calvert. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
