Mr. Teurman was the father of our esteemed townsman, D. E. Teurman: "One of Cordell's most respected and beloved citizens was called away to his final home last Thursday morning, March 1st. A gentleman in the very highest and best sense of the word, courteous, gentle, kindly, genial, always ready to do a kindly deed or say a good word to those with whom he came in contact day by day, William Teurman will be missed from his place amongst his fellowmen more than many who during life have made more noise and bluster in the affairs of their day and generation. Mr. Teurman was born in Golden City, Mo., on the 15th day of May, 1860. When he was two years old his parents moved to Sherman, Texas and there he grew up to young manhood. His father was killed soon after the removal to Texas and from his third year he was brought up with only a mother's care. On September 3rd, 1882, he was married to Miss Martha E. Jennings, of Sherman, Texas, and the young couple continued to live in that city for some sixteen years. About nineteen years ago they moved on to a homestead in Oklahoma and continued to live there for the next nine years. Ten years ago the family moved into Cordell, and they have been one of the good substantial pillars of the community ever since. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Teurman six children, four boys and two girls. They are all living today and all but one were present last Saturday at the funeral. One son, Irl, who is in charge of the recruiting office for the United States Navy, located in Los Angeles, Cal., was unable to get away from his duties in order to attend the ceremony. The children are Roy L., of Gray, Okla.; Ira J., also of Gray; Irl of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Kressie T. Herber of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Deo E. of Elk City and Miss Jewel who lived at home with her parents in Cordell. The funeral took place at the home and was conducted by Rev. W. T. Pearman, the pastor of the Presbyterian church. Dr. J. N. Armstrong of the Christian College read the Scripture lesson, Rev. A. J. Young led in prayer and Rev. C. T. Davis gave a short address filled with comforting assurance about happy reunion where partings shall be no more. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
