(26 Apr 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Early Resident of This Section Dies at Home of Her Son. SAYRE, Okla., April 26 - Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the First Methodist church for Mrs. Martha A. Thomas, pioneer citizen of this country. Rev. T. N. Weeks, pastor of the church, was in charge of the ceremony. Mrs. Thomas passed away Thursday morning at the home of her son O. B. Thomas, on North Broadway. She had been ill for many weeks and her demise was not unexpected. Mrs. Thomas was born in Arkansas July 24, 1851. She came to Oklahoma with her family in an early day and settled on a claim in what was at that time Roger Mills county. Her husband preceeded her in death many years. Mrs. Thomas was a devout member of the First Methodist church here and was a faithful attendant as long as she was able to go. She reared several children. The body was shipped to Carlon (sic), Arkansas, where interment was to be had Saturday afternoon. (28 Apr 1930, Monday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral services were held Thursday April 24 at 2 o'clock for Mrs. Martha A. Thomas who died at the home of her son O. B. Thomas late Wednesday night. Mrs. Thomas had been in poor health for a number of months and became completely unconscious at the last. Her condition was thought to be improved a few hours prior to her death. It was thought that she was dead at noon on Wednesday but her condition improved and relatives had hopes of her recovery up until the time that she died. At the time of her death Mrs. Thomas was 78 years and 9 months of age. She was born on July 24, 1851, in Vienna, Illinois. In 1870 she was united in marriage with W. H. Thomas. In 1914 Mr. Thomas died leaving Mrs. Thomas a widow. She was a member of the Methodist church. Six children are left to mourn the death of Mrs. Thomas, five boys and one girl. They are as follows: Charles E. Thomas of Clinton; W. G. Thomas of Sayre; Fred H. Thomas of Oklahoma City; L. F. Thomas of Oklahoma City; and O. B. Thomas of Sayre, Mrs. Birdie Gratton of Fort Smith, Arkansas and one daughter Mrs. Lillian Chitwood preceded her in death in 1914. Besides the above named relatives she is survived by two sisters of Marion, Illinois, 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church with Rev. T. N. Weeks officiating. Immediately after the service the family left with the body for Carlton, Arkansas, where interment was made. Killough-Hullum funeral parlor was in charge.
