(6 Jan 1916, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): AN AGED MASON At the meeting of the county A.F. & A.M., at Sayre one of the oldest Masons was C. C. Upton. He recently died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. Cain, in Carter, and we glean the following as part of the "Resolutions of Respect" of Carter Lodge No. 423 A.F.&A.M.: "Bro. Upton was born Aug. 9th 1855, near the Cumberland Mountain, Tenn. He was initiated, passed and raised to the Sublime degree of M. M. over 40 years ago, in his native state. "At the time of his death he was a member in good standing of Sayre Lodge No. 195, A.F.&A.M., of the Royal Arch and Knight Templar Lodge of Elk City. He was a great lover of Masonary and made it his study, having written several pieces of credit on the subject. "He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in which denomination he was licensed to preach at the age of 26. "He was married to Miss Mary Stanfield at the age of 39 years, and to this union was born two children, a boy who died in early childhood and a daughter, who is now Mrs. Geo. Cain of this place. "It is better to know such men as Bro. Upton than to tell of them. His worth to the community is inestimable. His personal character in life stands as a living monument as a guide to those living as they journey through life; and his many good works and deeds will surely follow after him. And while it is hard to give up such men, we must realize that God's ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts as our thoughts, but let us bow in humble submission to the will and decree of the Allwise Ruler of the universe, realizing that He doeth all things well." --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
