(17 Feb 1916, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): A SAD DEATH One of the many sad deaths that has lately come to our little city, was that of Noble S. Ward, which occurred last Sunday morning, February 13th, after a short illness. Just three weeks before Mr. Ward with his family arrived here to make this their home, he being one of the company in charge of the Quality Theatre. Everything pointed to success, and happiness and our people were glad to give them a hearty welcome for they recognized Mr. Ward as a splendid business man and he and his wife made friends immediately of all whom they met. While not well for sometime, Mr. Ward was not thought to be in a serious condition until Saturday evening, so that his death the next morning came as a great shock to all. The deceased had traveled extensively and wherever he went he made friends, for he was a man of good principles, a fine conversationalist, and was recognized as one with much intellectual ability. A friend who had known him for years, spoke of his brilliant mind, high ideals and of his devotion to his wife and children. While not a member of the church, he believed in the christian religion. Noble S. Ward was born in the state of Michigan, June 6th, 1876, being 39 years 8 months and 7 days old at the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Miss Alta Harrison July 25th, 1905, at Jennings, La. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children, Noble, Jr., and Bernice May, and his mother, living at Janesville, Wis. The mother was unable to come to the funeral of her only child, being prostrated by his sudden death. For fifteen years Mr. Ward was in the drug business in Chicago, being a graduate in pharmacy from the Lake Forest University of Chicago. He had also graduated from the College of Law, but had never practiced in this profession. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the Elks Lodge. His funeral services, which were private, were held in the Elk's parlors, Tuesday afternoon. Rev. J. C. Boyce spoke words of comfort to the bereaved ones, after which the body was laid to rest in Fairlawn cemetery, the members of the Elk's Lodge having charge of services at the grave. (17 Feb 1916, Thursday, Southwest News & Leader, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Noble Ward who moved here recently from Abilene, Texas, and became associated with Mr. Price in the management of the Quality Theatre, died at an early hour Sunday morning following an illness of only a few hours. Mr. Ward had been a sufferer for several years, but was stricken Saturday and his condition became serious in a few hours. An operation was resorted to with the hope of saving his life, but it came too late. Mr. Ward was a member of the Elks and Masons, and the remains were taken in charge by the Elks and turned over to Grubitz and Son, and held until Tuesday afternoon when funeral services were conducted at the Elk's Hall by Dr. Boyce of the Presbyterian church, and interment was had in the local cemetery. Mrs. Ward expects to make Elk City her home, and for this reason the remains were not shipped to his former home for burial as was first reported. Mr. Ward is survived by his widow and two children. He had lived here only a few weeks but had made many friends, and news of his death was received with general regret. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison of Pauls Valley, Okla., father and mother of Mrs. Ward, and Jay Harris (sic) of the same place, a brother, are here with Mrs. Ward. Mr. Ward's mother lived in Michigan and was unable to come for the funeral. He was her only son and her condition is serious as a result of the shock. The News joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved wife and children. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
