(25 Sep 1919, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): JOSEPH F. WEST The death of Joseph F. West last Friday evening caused sadness in our little city. He was one of the pioneers and a man held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, South, on Sunday afternoon. A large crowd was present to pay the last tribute to their friend and brother. Rev. R. R. Coffey had charge of the services at the church and in his address he spoke of the good honest life Mr. West had lived, and what a consistent christian he had been. He was a christian, with the belief of the Seventh Day Adventist, and keeping their Sabbath, he also kept Sunday of our land. He gave up an honest business at one time because he could not conscientiously work at it on Saturday. He was a devoted husband and father, a true friend. The body was followed to the Fairlawn cemetery by a large number, where the I.O.O.F. took charge, using their beautiful burial service. Mr. West had been a member of this order for twenty-one years and was ever faithful to its obligations. He also joined the Woodman of the World the same year at Geary, being a charter member of both lodges. Joseph F. West was born near Danville, Ill., October 2nd, 1858 and died at his home in Elk City, Sept. 19th, at 7:45 o'clock p.m., aged 62 years, 11 months and 17 days. He was married to Miss Linnie Ellen Huff in 1890. To this union four children were born: Weaver, who died in 1907; Jerry L., who has been living at Normangee, Texas; Nina and Bessie. He moved to Geary, Okla., in 1898, and three years later, in the spring of 1901, he settled on a homestead three miles east of Elk City. Besides his wife and three children he leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Britingham of Prescott, Kansas and three brothers; W. J. West, Pleasanton, Kansas; S. E. West, Sejulo, Colo.; and O. M. West of Kansas City, Mo. Those attending the funeral from out of town were Mrs. S. F. West of Colorado; Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Huff, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Huff and Elmer Huff of Geary, Okla. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
