(5 Apr 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): THE DEATH OF MRS. CHAS. WHITLEDGE The Death Angel has again been in our midst and claimed for his own a dear wife and mother, Mrs. Laura May Whitledge, wife of Chas. Whitledge. Her death occurred Saturday night at her home five miles northwest of Elk City, after an illness of six days from pneumonia. The news that her illness was serious did not become known until Friday, and the announcement that she could not recover was a shock to the entire community. Many of her loved ones were with her during her illness and all was done that loving hands could do in her behalf, but nothing could baffle the subtle power of her disease, nor stay the hand of Death. She retained consciousness until the end came, and just before her death came, expressed herself as being submissive to the Lord's will. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Miller of near Berlin, Okla., and was born at Endfield, White Co., Ill., Jan. 17, 1884 and was in her 33rd year a the time of her death. She was converted and united with the M. E. Church at the age of thirteen years, and lived a Christian life. She was united in marriage to Chas. Whitledge, Nov. 20, 1904, to this union was born six children, whom with their father survive. The funeral services were conducted at the Grandview school house, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, by Rev. D. B. Cooke. And at the conclusion the body was interred in the Grandview cemetery, followed thence by a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends. Besides her husband and children, Mrs. Whitledge leaves a dear mother and father, three brothers and one sister to mourn her departure. A Friend. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
