WHITLOCK, MRS. J. D.
(11 Mar 1926, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK):
After an illness of ten days with pneumonia, Mrs. J. D. Whitlock, aged 73
years, five months and 22 days, died at her home ten miles northwest of
town, Tuesday evening at 11:55.
Mrs. Whitlock, besides her husband leaves a family of ten children, the
names of which are:  M. B., Denton, Texas; J. N., Dallas, Texas; Captain
S. C., Fort Worth, Texas; S. B., Grandfield; Mrs. P. S. Hartman, Live Oak,
California; R. L., Elk City; Miss Pearl, Herman and Charles Whitlock and
Mrs. Dennis Ryan of Loveland.  Also she has one brother, Rev. A. S. Nead
of Limestone, Tennessee.
Mrs. Whitlock has been a resident of this community since 1907, coming
here at the opening of the Big Pasture, from Hobart.  She moved to this
section from Washington county, Tennessee, in 1904, locating at Hobart and
from there down here.  She was known all over the Big Pasture as "Grandma"
Whitlock, and the esteem in which she was held can in some measure be
reached by the number giving flowers.  Her grave was literally buried
beneath wreaths and bouquets, her daughters-in-law and grand children
carrying the flowers to the grave.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the family home by Rev.
Joseph Nill, an old neighbor and friend of the family, assisted by Rev. C.
C. Childress and Rev. Bates of this city.  Burial was made in the
Grandfield cemetery.
Six of her eldest sons officiated as pallbearers.  All of her children
were at her bedside when death came with the exception of her daughter,
Mrs. Hartman of California, who was unable to reach here.  Many out of
town relatives were present including C. C. Whitlock of Aubrey, Texas.
