SAM (Nov 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Brother of Senior Editor Dies in Missouri A telegram received by the junior editor Sunday night conveyed the sad news of the death of an uncle, W. Sam Wightman, a brother of the senior editor, Mrs. Alice Blackburn. We had known for several weeks that he was ill, but the family had hopes of his recovery until a week before his death when he began suffering intensely from heart trouble. All of the nearest relatives were called to his bedside, but loving hands and skilled physicians could not keep him longer. For the past thirteen years Mr. Wightman and his sister, Ada Wightman, have been editors and publishers of the Bethany Clipper, one of the best weekly papers in Missouri, and his death will be felt keenly by the host of friends and readers of the "Clipper." A devoted wife, two daughters, Nina and Ruth, a son "Bud", where letters from Fort Sill are frequently published in this paper, will miss the care and love of a husband and father. Four sisters, Mrs. Alice Blackburn of Elk City; Miss Mary Wightman of Grimael, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Cushman and Miss Ada Wightman of Bethany, and a brother, P. G. Wightman, also of Bethany, Mo., were with him during the last days of his illness. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church, Bethany, Missouri, Tuesday, November 6th, 1917, conducted by Dr. S. Carothers, of Cameron, Mo., an old friend of the family, assisted by Revs. W. S. Welsh, G. V. Perron and A. N. Cove of Bethany, Mo. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
