(24 May 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): DEATH OF JOHN WILSON The death of John Wilson Wednesday at 9 A.M., marked the passing of another of Elk City's pioneers. He came here in 1901, the year Elk City began its existence. For the first few years he was employed in the Bonebrake Hardware Store, which he afterwards bought, remaining in the business until about eight years ago. "Uncle John" as he was commonly called, was perhaps as well known as any other man in this section. While in business he made a host of friends by his courteous treatment of all, never being too busy for a chat with his friends. For the past two years he has been ill most of the time, gradually growing weaker, until Wednesday morning when the family thought he was just sleeping, he passed away. He was born April 14th, 1845, at Fort Wayne, Indiana. When just a young man he went to Iowa and enlisted in the Army, serving until the end of the war. He then went to Tekama, Nebraska, and was in the hardware business there for thirty-one years, and County Treasurer for four years. In 1874 he married Miss Ella Mean and to this union were born four children: Mrs. Majorie Russell of Sayre; Roy and Herbert Wilson of Strong City, and Miss Mildred Wilson, who is here at the home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 today at the residence, under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge of which he was a member. Rev. Houck will speak words of comfort to the bereaved ones. The remains will be laid to rest in the Fairlawn Cemetery; Geo. R. Grubitz & Son in charge. The sympathy of the host of friends is extended to the family in their sorrow. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
