(29 Oct 1925, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Henrietta Arvexinia Cook Woodward (sic) was born in the State of Arkansas on the third of June 1848 and went to her eternal reward from Elk City, Oklahoma, October 26, 1925, having reached the fine age of 77 years, four months and 23 days. In her early childhood she went with her parents to Kaufman, Texas; where on May 2, 1867 she was united in marriage to Robt. Dorsey Woodward. After a married life of thirty-three years he passed to his reward. Shortly after this event Sister Woodward came to Elk City where for the last twenty years she has been home-maker for her brother J. M. Cook and her nieces Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Woodward has been a devoted Christian all her life and a member of the Christian Church since early womanhood. For many years she was president of the missionary society, she delighted to stand before her Sunday School class and point out the way of the Lord to those who were in need of the Savior. Since her early years she has had the care and responsibility of others and she always rendered her service with a smile. Her mother in law became a helpless invalid, who even had to be fed; her own mother became ill and had to be cared for through long months of suffering; and then her husband suffered paralysis and received tender care through the last years of his life. Through it all there was never a word of complaint, for she served gladly. Another phase of her service is interesting. Although she never had any children of her own she was the foster mother of three motherless children. She took her sisters child, James Franklin Mays, when he was three months old and cared for him until he was grown. Her brothers James and Will both lost their wives and were each left with the responsibility of a little girl. Mrs. Woodward came to the rescue and became the mother of Vera Arvezinia and Florence. Two brothers and sister preceeded her into eternity. The immediate family J. N. Cook; his daughter, Mrs. Walter Gibbs and granddaughter Jannell Gibbs; Mrs. Florence Cook Miller a niece who has been a faithful attendant during the last illness; Edward Cook of Tucson, Arizona; and Frank Cook of Sylvester, Texas, will all mourn her loss. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church at four o'clock Tuesday afternoon in charge of Rev. C. H. Lemmex, pastor. The body was laid to rest in Fairlawn Cemetery where many beautiful floral offerings, the gift of love of the many friends marked the last resting place of "Aunt Henry" as she was affectionately known by those who knew her and loved her. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
