(10 Nov 1927, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. W. S. Young, died in Elk City Sunday, November 6, at the age of 70 years. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, November 7, at 2 p.m., with Rev. John Tracy officiating. Burial in Fairlawn Cemetery. Grubitz & Son in charge. With the death of Mrs. W. S. Young, last Sunday, goes another of those sturdy people who gave so much to the character of Elk City in its formative days. Mrs. Young had not been well for many months; a trip to California last winter appeared to benefit her, but the return to Elk City in the summer saw only a further decline in strength. Specialists in Oklahoma City were consulted in vain. Returning home last Friday Mrs. Young grew worse so rapidly that she was brought to the Tisdal Hospital on Saturday for more efficient care than could be given in her own home. She died peacefully Sunday noon. The funeral service, conducted from the Presbyterian Church of which she had long been a faithful member, was in charge of the pastor, Rev. John A. Tracy, assisted by the choir who sang the songs most loved by Mrs. Young. Her maiden name was Flora J. Pool, second child of James P. and Mary A. Pool. Other children were Edward W., Albert T., and Lora V. Pool. Mrs. Young was born at Des Moines, Iowa on January 1st, 1857, being 70 years, 10 months and 5 days old at her death. November 2nd, 1882, saw her happily married to William S. Young at Fall City, Nebraska. After some years of residence in Nebraska, they came to Elk City. Mr. and Mrs. Young had no children of their own; but in the biggness of their hearts they took two girls, Della and Allie, and reared them as their own, according them all they would have bestowed upon their own. Della is an accomplished musician and is living at Roswell, New Mexico. Allie is married and living on a ranch in Colorado. For the present Mr. Young is resting with relatives at Enid. He is uncertain about future plans but expects to return to Elk City in a short time and then decide what he will do. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
