She brought home a copy of the Rockridge County News, printed at Lexington, in which the following obituary, which the many friends of Mrs. Zollman will be interested in reading: John William Zollman, who as a Confederate veteran thrice wounded in battle, did long and valued service for the Confederacy, died quietly Saturday, March 28, 1923, at his home four miles west of Lexington, it is related that morning for the first time in several score of years had he failed to rise from his slumbers and take up daily duties. His life was as quiet, eliminating his four years as a soldier, as was his death. He was a man of even temperament and gentle life, faithful, industrious, thrifty, he died on paternal acres where he was born and had lived all his days. He was as good a citizen as he had been a good soldier, a man of simple taste and simple life; a member of Lee-Jackson Camp of Confederate Veterans, and one whose familiar form even after he passed the four score mark, was rarely absent from its reunions and celebrations. He entered the Confederate army at the opening of the war as an original member of a Rockridge company mustered into service as Company E, Fifty-second Virginia infantry. His company participated with Jackson's army in the battles of Cross Keys and Gaines Mill and other engagements. In both of the battles named he was wounded. Returning to the army, after recovering from the wound at Gaines Mill in 1862, he became a member of Rockridge's earliest cavalry company, the First Dragoons, Company C, First Virginia cavalry which followed Fitz Lee and Stuart. He suffered a third wound at Cannon's farm in 1864. He carried a bullet in his body to his grave. Mr. Zollman was a son of Henry Zollman, his mother was Miss Shafer. He was born Nov. 3, 1839. he married Oct. 14, 1868, Edmonia T. Ackerly of Rockridge who preceded him to the grave more than twenty years ago. Of this union six children were born and all are now living, and all were present at his funeral: Lena M., wife of the late C. Burns Zollman of Walton, Ind.; Pearl Elvira (the youngest), wife of the late Charles Zollman of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Jessie Lee, wife of Robert Irvine; John Henry; Ida, wife of Poague Smith, and William, all of this county. Mr. Zollman was a communicant of Oxford Presbyterian church. He was buried Tuesday afternoon in the family burial ground on his farm, where lies the bodies of his wife, his parents. His pastor, Rev. N. A. Parker of Oxford church officiated. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
