(26 Aug 1909, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): The death angel visited the home of our esteemed fellow townsman, Judge J. F. Cannon last Thursday at 6 p.m., and deprived him of his beloved wife, also Iris infant daughter was by this sad death made motherless. The death of Mrs. Cannon came as a dreadful shock, for although she had been suffering from an attack of fever for about 3 weeks, she was apparently convalescent shortly before the end came and the immediate cause of her death was heart failure. Mrs. Mattie R. Rowell, nee Mattie R. Cannon, was born in Tennessee, was married to John F. Cannon in 1896. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon moved to Erick in 1903, where they have since lived, occupying an important place in the affections of the people here. Mrs. Cannon was in the full bloom of matured womanhood. Her home instincts were strong, her affection for kindred and friends was tender and abiding. Among all she ranked as a woman of culture and refinement, sympathetic, a kind neighbor, a devoted wife and mother, an unselfish friend and withal a woman of heroic mould, bravely meeting the stern requirements and disappointments of life and generously sharing her portion of its joys to the end that a recollection of her pure life will serve as a sweet benediction. During all her life, until about three weeks before her demise, she was denied the joy of motherhood and the sublimity of that brief period of maternity was marred by the pain and anguish of disease, which all that medical skill and devoted, caring nursing could not alleviate. Early in life she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and affiliated with the Baptist church. Later in life she withdrew from that denomination and joined the Christian church of which she was a consistent member when her heavenly Father called her to Himself. To him who mourns man's greatest loss, we say, she has gone from your sight, but because of the love and influence of a life like hers, she is yours still; she is still the mother of your precious darling daughter. The immortal Longfellow said, "There is no death, what seems so is transition," and may she not by this transition wield over you a stronger force for truth and goodness than before. Mrs. Cannon is survived by her husband and little daughter, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Rowel, of Gould, Okla., three sisters, Mrs. Steel of Lynnville, Tenn., Mrs. May Rushing of Newlin, Texas, Mrs. Nannie Stevens, Leonard, Texas; two brothers, Woodson and James Rowel, of Gould, Texas (sic); a half brother, Jeff McClaren of Texas, and a half sister, Mrs. Sallie Rowel, of Hollis, Okla., besides numerous other relatives more distantly akin. Impressive funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Elder H. E. Stubbs, at the Christian church Friday afternoon Aug. 20, and a large concourse of sorrowing friends followed her remains to the cemetery where interment was made. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
