The many friends and relatives are mourning the death of Joe Coffee (sic), who passed away last Monday evening. Mr. Coffee had been sick for about two weeks, but not thought serious until Monday morning when he was rushed to the Erick hospital where an examination showed that he had been suffering from appendicitis and a rupture of the appendix caused his death. Mr. Coffee has lived in the Sweetwater community for a number of years. He leaves a wife and ten children. Funeral services were held at the Buffalo cemetery, Tuesday evening, under the directions of the Masonic lodge. (30 Aug 1928, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): DEATH. Joe L. Coffey was born in Cook county, Texas, August 26, 1888. He was converted and joined the Baptist church at the age of 19 years. He was married to Miss Ola Thomas, October 16, 1910, at Buffalo church. To this union 11 children were born, 1 child preceded the father in death having died in infancy. He departed this life August 10, 1928 at the age of 39 years, 11 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn his departure wife and ten children of the immediate family. He also leaves a father, five brothers and 1 sister, namely Will Coffey of Oklahoma City, Granville Coffey of Sweetwater, Oklahoma, J. W. Coffey of Erick, Oklahoma, T. C. Coffey of Mayfield, Oklahoma, L. Coffey of Grimes, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Jane Knox of Mayfield, Oklahoma. He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. His mother passed away May 18th, 1919, she was laid to rest in the Buffalo cemetery. And thus we are confronted with the truthfulness of the Divine injuction (sic). "It is appointed unto men once to die." In the going of Mr. Coffey the wife and children have suffered a loss irreparable humanly speaking, yet in their sorrow and loneliness they can enjoy the priviledge (sic) of casting all their care upon Him who can sustain at all times. Mr. Coffey had a extensive acquaintance and a host of friends who showed their sympathy during his illness also attending the funeral in such large numbers. The funeral was conducted by Brother S. N. Wilson at Buffalo church on August 21.
