COFFEY Died February 4th, 1911, at 1:45 p.m., at his residence in east Erick, age 56 years, 9 months and 4 days. He was born in Murry county, Tennessee. There was probably not a better known man in this part of Beckham county than John C. Coffey, having lived here for the past six years, and all who knew him loved and respected him. He was a man of courage and when he was in favor of a proposition was not afraid to come out in the open and advocate it. He belonged to that old school that is fast passing away, and it wont (sic) be long until only the memory of these grand old men will be left to remind us of their many deeds. We will miss Mr. Coffey, because he was one of those who always had a good word to say, and it gave us great pleasure to talk and joke with him. He was a staunch Democrat and believed in the policies advocated by his party, and was every (sic) true to its principles. He came with his family to Erick from Hereford, Texas, on the first day of September 1905, and engaged in the hotel business for sometime, disposing of his hotel. Later he entered the coal business in company with Mr. Watts, who died about two years ago. Mr. Coffey continued the business until his health failed and he was forced to retire. For the past 3 years he had been a sufferer with dropsy, which ailment caused his death. Mr. Coffey leaves a wife, four daughters, two sons, five sisters and one brother, and a large number of friends to mourn his death. The funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church of which he was a devoted member, Sunday, February 5th, 1911, at 2:30, under the directions of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges. The funeral services were preached by Rev. Henderlite, and the remains were laid to rest in the Erick cemetery. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
