Five days prior to her death she had undergone a serious surgical operation under the skill of Dr. R. C. McCreery and until within a few hours of her death she seemed to be in a satisfactory state convalescence, but about six hours before her death it became apparent to Dr. McCreery that dreaded blood poisoning had set up and notwithall he with the assistance of Dr. Tilton could do, Mrs. Davis grew rapidly worse and died about seven o'clock in the evening of Tuesday April 15, 1913. Mrs. Wilma Davis formerly Miss Wilma Thompson, was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Thompson of Erick. She was born November 13, 1890, at Pineville, Arkansas, but for several years had lived with her father and brothers about one mile north-east of Erick. Miss Wilma was a member of the Christian Church, having joined the church at Erick about nine years ago. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church conducted by Rev. Carmon of Texola. Interment was made at the Erick Cemetery. Mrs. Davis' death and funeral were especially saddening for the reason that she was denied the comforting care of any of her sisters during her last hours of life and although she had four living sisters, it was absolutely impossible for any of them to be with her during her illness at her funeral. Her sister, Mrs. Bird, of Sayre, was at the bedside of her husband, J. W. Bird, who was at the point of death. Another sister was at the point of death herself at Madill, Oklahoma. Mrs. Joe Buchanan living at Hurford (sic) Texas, and did not learn of Mrs. Davis' condition until too late to get here before the end came. The exact whereabouts of her sister, Mrs. Covington, was unknown and her sister, Mrs. Lee McCarty was dangerously ill at the McCreery Hospital, suffering from a nervous collapse that came upon her soon after Mrs. Davis' death. Her heartbroken father and two brothers, Messrs. Rob of Erick and Cleve Thompson of Oklahoma City were, owing to the unfortunate circumstances, the only relatives in attendance at her funeral. Mrs. Davis was a sweet-spirited loveable young lady and her sudden death has caused a pall of grief to hover over Erick since the occurrence of her untimely death. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
