(21 Jan 1909, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): As we are about to go to press the intelligence reaches us of the death of our old friend, Mr. Samuel E. Dowdell at his home about 4 1-2 miles northwest of Delhi Tuesday, Jan. 25 (sic). Mr. Dowdell was born in Alabama about 74 years ago. He came to this country about 9 years ago and settled on a fine farm about 6 miles east of Erick. He was a consistent member of the Baptist church for 50 years and his peaceful death was evidence that all was well between him and his God. He had been in a poor state of health for a year or more prior to death, suffering with kidney and bladder trouble. Mr. Dowdell was a most loveable old gentleman, always cheery and cordial with those whom he came in contact. He assured the writer some time ago that he always made it a rule to come into our office when he came to town, and our reply was that we appreciated his visits and hoped that he would continue to come frequently for a long time, to which he gave a pissimistic (sic) response (unusual for him) stating that he was breaking in health and might not be able to get to Erick many more times. We believe he has never been here since that time. Mr. Dowdell is survived by his widow and five children - one daughter and four sons, as follows: Mrs. Wm. Smith, who lives about 35 miles south of Erick near Russell and Messrs. John, W. H., Marsh and Lawrence, all of whom live in the vicinity and are well known. Rev. Shaw, of Erick, an old friend, preached Mr. Dowdell's funeral sermon today and interment was made in Delhi cemetery. The Altruist, together with everyone else who knew Grandpa Dowdell feels his death as a personal bereavement and we extend most sincere sympathy to his surviving loved ones. (28 Jan 1909, Thursday, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): S. E. Dowdell of near Delhi died Jan. 21, 1909, aged 73 years. He was an ex Confederate soldier and belonged to the third Alabama regiment Co. G., Wheeler cavalry. He was a good soldier, a devoted Christian, member of the Delhi Baptist church. He was laid to rest in the Delhi cemetery on the same day that he died, at 4 p.m. Brother Dowdell was loved by all who knew him and was a kind and devoted husband, a loving father. The funeral was conducted by the writer. May the blessing of God rest on the bereaved family. Dear old Confederate soldiers, may we all live our last days near God so we will meet old Brother Dowdell in heaven. God bless them all. W. D. Shaw. (29 Dec 1904, Thursday, Erick Enterprise, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): S. E. Dowdell, whose $4,000 160 acres of land lies 8 miles east in the famous Delhi valley, was born in Calhoun county, Alabama, 68 years ago. When the state seceded from the union and war was declared against the seceding state by the United States, and the confederate states called for volunteers, Mr. Dowdell was one of the first to respond and went out as captain, but later resigned to join Gen. Joe Wheeler's cavalery (sic) as first orderly sargeant (sic). He served nearly four years for his country as a good soldier and was in over 100 engagements. He surrendered with Gen. Wheeler and settled down as a loyal citizen and joined the democratic party. In 1895 he and his family moved to Clay county, Texas, where they lived until 1899, when they removed to Greer county, Oklahoma, filed and settled on the land he now owns. He came here with a few head of stock and but little money, but now he has plenty around him and buys nothing on time. He has raised good crops every year since he has been here and raised a half bale of cotton per acre this year. He has a nice residence and all the needed out buildings and now lives comfortably. He has four sons and one daughter, all of whom live in Greer county. He is a deacon of the Baptist church and lives a most exemplary life and has the confidence and respect of all his neighbors. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
