J. Kemper in Carter. Mrs. Alibra Downs was born June 17th, 1832, and died April 8th, 1911, age 78 years, 9 months and 22 days. She professed faith in Christ at the age of 14 years and united with the Missionary Baptist church of which she was a consistent member until her death. The writer became acquainted with "Grandma" Downs last July in a meeting at Sulphur Baptist church in Greer county, where he is pastor. Deceased was well known in that community as a faithful christian worker, many times she would rise in testimony meetings and tell that while she had no near relatives than step-children, she was going here and there to meetings, spending her life in serving the Master. She came to Carter some two or three months ago to assist Mr. Kemper, her nephew by marriage, in caring for his motherless children, and it was here while on this mission that she finished her work on earth, and the summons came when spirit took flight in answer to that welcome voice, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant," to one who had been faithful for 64 years, and never wearied in well doing. Her friends are sad at her departure, but their loss is her gain, and friends we have not lost Grandma; no, we that have hope in Christ will meet her in the City above. She has only gone on a few days in advance, and there is still a connecting link with all the redeemed. It is only farewell for a few days. The funeral services were conducted by the writer at the Carter cemetery, subject, Psalms 68.24. "Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel and afterward receive me to glory." W. H. Morrow Grandma Downs was well known in Erick and has many friends here who will be sorry to learn of her death. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
