(5 Aug 1909, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): At the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Gilbert in West Erick, Miss Mattie Gilbert peacefully passed away at 12:20 o'clock last Sunday evening, after an illness of about a month. Deceased had suffered a severe attack of typhoid fever, but a few days before the end came her physicians and loved ones were rejoiced in the belief that she was convalescent and her relapse resulting in death was felt by them more poignantly than if she had not rallied in a degree. Miss Mattie was a beautiful young lady, just blooming from happy girlhood into the blush of refined young womanhood. Her age at death was 17 years, 10 months and 24 days. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church last Sunday afternoon by her pastor, Elder H. E. Stubbs, who spake a beautiful eulogy concerning her. Misses Pearl Sheets and Cora Haddock who were her intimate friends most expressively sang a duet, during the singing of which one of the young ladies was overcome by grief. At the close of the services the lid of the dainty white casket was removed and those who wished were permitted to take a last look at her, after which a long procession of mourners accompanied her remains to the Erick cemetery where interment was made. Miss Mattie Gilbert was born September 6, 1891, in Cook county, Texas, where she spent her early childhood. She came to Oklahoma with her parents about 8 years ago, and during the time intervening since then, she has been a happy, lovable school girl and young lady in our midst, becoming more and more endeared to everyone in the community as time went by. She is survived by her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Burrows of McLean, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Gilbert of Collinsville, Tex., her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Gilbert, two brothers and three sisters, besides numerous other relatives, more distant kin. Grief because of her death is not more keenly felt by anyone than by the splendid young man, Mr. Eural Evans, who since childhood had been her favored lover, and had she not have died the culmination of this courtship of her would probably have been realized in the sacred bonds of matrimony within a few months. To him and to her bereaved relatives, this paper extends most sincere consolation. (5 Aug 1909, Thursday, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): In Memory. It is with deep regret and sorrow that we are called to chronicle the death of Miss Mattie Gilbert. She departed this life at her home in Erick on Sunday morning Aug. 1, at 12:20. Should she have lived till September, she would have been 18 years of age. She was just reaching womanhood and gave great promise of making a good and useful woman, one that not only her parents could be proud of, but all her associates and acquaintances. She was one who exerted a good influence on her friends, and it is from these facts that she is so sincerely mourned and missed. But Oh! what comfort we have in knowing that the departed one is basking in the sunshine of God. May the Father's arm sustain them in their grief and His peace fill their inmost souls. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
