(9 Mar 1911, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Death of Mr. J. L. Hoddock (sic), Sr. Mr. J. L. Haddock, whose death occurred this week was one of the oldest persons in this community and had lived here for the past 9 years. He was born June 7, 1838, in Wayne county, Tennessee. July 2, 1856 he was married to Mrs. Laura Robertson. To this union was born eight children, as follows: Mrs. Lucinda Phillips, Mrs. Sarah Hayes, Mr. J. L. Haddock, Jr., Mrs. Bettie Minton, Will P. Haddock, R. O. Haddock, Mrs. Acenah Smith, all of whom are living but Will P. and W. I. Haddock, who died several years ago. Mr. J. L. Haddock, Sr., died March 7, 1911, at 12:55 a.m. In his death our community loses one of our best citizens. He was a man of strong conviction, which was observed and felt by all who came in contact with him, and which together with his many other qualities won the respect of all who knew him. Fifty years ago he joined the Christian church. He was a soldier in every fact, armed and equipped at every point to do battle for his faith, a worthy competitor for any religious controversalist. Not a murmur or complaint escaped his lips; but as the brave, resolute man, the devoted, trusting christian that he was, he approached the last and greatest crisis in human existance without a world of complaint or a shadow of dismay and quietly passed into the great unknown. The funeral services took place at the Christian Church and the remains were interred at the Erick cemetery. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
