(19 Jul 1934, Thursday, Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral services were conducted at Gardena Baptist Church Monday afternoon for James H. Hanks, 563 West 164th Street, who passed away Thursday morning in a Los Angeles hospital. Rev. J. L. Bogue of the Gardena Baptist Church, and Rev. Griffin of the Church of Christ, Long Beach, conducted the services. Mr. and Mrs. Morris sang as a duet, "In The Land Where We Never Grow Old," and Mrs. W. I. Tresise sang "No Disappointment in Heaven." Interment with C. L. Closson Funeral Home in charge was in Augelus Abbey Mausoleum. Mr. Hanks is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Hanks of Gardena, six daughters, three sons, 30 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters in Christian County, Missouri. The daughters are: Mrs. Maude Watts, Fresno; Mrs. Eva Hughes, Los Angeles, Mrs. Dora Lane, Long Beach; Mrs. Jewel Tracey, Modesto; Mrs. Clara Nelson, Oakland; the sons, Roy Hanks, Richmond, Calif.; George Hanks, Sayre, Okla.; Raleigh Hanks, Memphis, Tenn.; the brothers, John, Albert and Paul Hanks and the sisters Mrs. Nancy Chaftin and Mrs. Tolitha Garrison. Mr. Hanks was born February 8, 1860 in Springfield, Missouri. He came to Gardena in 1930 making his home at the 164th street address. He had been a farmer for more than 40 years in Oklahoma, Illinois and Missouri. He retired 14 years ago. He was the father of 12 children, nine of whom are living. This obituary appeared in the Los Angeles paper. Mr. Hanks is an uncle of Mrs. Dora B. Gallegly and father of Mrs. Eva Hughes. He was one of Ericks pioneers, but moved to California a few years ago.
