HAYS (27 Apr 1905, Erick Newspaper, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Early last Tuesday morning Mrs. Hays Harrington who, together with her husband and two children, were enroute overland from their former home near Cornish, Ind. Terr., to Norval, N. M., died in their wagon near Erick. Mrs. Harrington was suffering with consumption in its last stages and was going to New Mexico, hoping thereby to regain health, but death overtook her while she was still enroute. Mrs. Harrington has a cousin, Mrs. Ed. Barber, whose husband conducts a transfer business in Texola, and she was especially desirous of reaching that point before death came. She had given up hope of living to reach New Mexico. The incidents of Mrs. Harrington's last days on earth were very sad. She had known for several days that she could not survive for long, but she and those with her entertained the hope that she might at least reach the home of her sister before life became extinct. Her hope fell short of that by only eight miles. The Harrington family was accompanied on its journey by Mr. Taylor Barber, a gentleman eighty-five years of age, and his two sons, Messrs. R. C. and Wm. Barber, who were relatives and did what they could for her comfort. Immediately after death came to Mrs. Harrington, a number of the members of the Eastern Star and other good women of Erick offered their assistance to the bereaved family and everything possible was done to minister to them. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
