(21 Jun 1928, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Rebecca M. Murphey was born at St. Francis, Arkansas, October 12th, 1844. She was the baby of a family of nine children. Her parents moved to Gallaton, Mo., when she was two years of age. In 1846 her father was called to the great beyond leaving her fatherless. At the age of twelve she came with her mother and family to Texas. She was converted at the age of sixteen and joined the M. E. Church at Honey Grove, Texas, and she has lived a faithful Christian life before her family and friends. She lived in Earath (Erath) Co., Texas during the Civil war, and underwent many hardships and at the close of the Civil war, she moved to Denton County, Texas. On June 9, 1870 at Louisville, Texas, she was united in marriage to Thomas J. Havins. To this union one daughter, Minnie Lee, was born. She moved with her husband and little daughter to Paluxy, Hood County, Texas in 1844 (sic) where she lived until 1900, when she came with her family to Oklahoma. Her husband, Thomas J. Havins filed on a homestead two miles and one half mile south of Erick in the Choctaw neighborhood November 15, 1900. They lived on their homestead and improved it. They had to endure many hardships and suffered many afflictions yet they were always happy and content and loved their home. They were both better known to their many friends as Grandma and Grandpa Havins. In 1914 Grandpa's health was so bad that they had to give up living on the old home and go live in the home of their daughter, Mrs. John G. Smith. On August 11, 1915, the death angle (sic) called Grandpa to his heavenly resting home and he was laid to rest in the Erick Cemetery, August 12th, 1915. Grandma has been a sufferer for the last twenty-five years. She had the misfortune to get her hip broken and she has been a cripple ever since. She has been a faithful loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she longed to join her husband and loved ones that had gone on before her. On June 2, 1928, the death Angle called Grandma to her heavenly home. God said you have suffered enough come up higher and Grandma has gone to join her dear old husband and the rest of her family that has gone on before her. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church Sunday evening 2:30 conducted by Rev. Weeks, pastor of the M. E. Church at Sayre. She was laid to rest beside her husband and sister in the Erick Cemetery. She leaves to mourn her loss, 1 daughter, Mrs. John G. Smith, one granddaughter, Beulah Mae Lucas, two great granddaughters, Lillian Lee and Sylvia Mae Lucas all of Erick, also a great host of friends and neighbors. Erick and the surrounding community are mourning the loss of one of their old inhabitants, Mrs. Rebecca M. Havins, 83 years old, who died June 2nd. She has lived in Beckham County for twenty nine years and was laid to rest in the Erick Cemetery, June third. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
