(28 Jul 1910, Thursday, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Friday evening, July 23, at 4:45 o'clock, J. F. Herring, passed away, thus removing from our midst one of our most esteemed citizens, a man of unquestioned integrity, unblemished character and unbending adherence to the principles in which he believed. And yet, with all his unflinching and almost stern attitude, in any question he thought right, which made many people admire him - he was liberal in his personal friendships and generous toward all his fellowmen. He was at all times a high minded man, a polished gentleman in his ideas. He was a credit to the city he loved so deeply, to which he clung, because of this love and associations, attending it, when the prospects elsewhere were more alluring. J. F. Herring was 59 years of age. He was born in Waxache (sic), Ellis county, Texas, October 27, 1852. He was married at Waxache in the year 1872 to Miss Anna James, with whom he lived until death. Eight children were born to them, five boys and three girls, seven of whom survive - all of them attended the funeral except one boy who resides in Texas and it was impossible for him to come. The funeral service was conducted at the Christian Church, of which he was a devoted member, by the Rev. H. E. Stubbs, at 2:15 last Saturday afternoon and the remains were buried in the Erick Cemetery. The Democrat extends our sympathy to the bereaved family in this hour of trouble. (Other notes): C. T. Herring of Amarillo, Texas, F. E. Herring of Elk City, Okla., E. M. Herring of Beaver county, Okla., Dr. Herring of Headrick, Okla., John Grayum and wife of Geary, Okla., R. T. Childress and wife of Elk City, Okla., and O. H. Young and wife, all relatives of J. F. Herring, who died last Friday in Erick, were here attending funeral services, which was held in Christian church Saturday, July 23, at 2:15 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
