J. w. Slaten was called to Sayre yesterday to conduct funeral services for Rev. A. B. Hill, who died at Sayre, Tuesday, November 28. Mr. Hill had been the pastor of the Baptist congregation at Sayre since last June when he came there from Delta, Miss. His death was caused by consumption. He was a highly educated man, a forceful preacher and a true man of God. Although Mr. Hill had resided at Sayre only about six months, he had in that short time become much endeared to the people there, who sincerely mourn his death and have for his surviving family, consisting of his widow and five small children, heartfelt sympathy in their great bereavement. Mr. Hill's remains were interred in Sayre cemetery. Rev. Slaten was assisted by the ministers of Sayre. (30 Nov 1905, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Rev. A. B. Hill, pastor of the Baptist congregation at this place, died at his residence in this city at 12 o'clock, Monday, November 27. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at 1 o'clock Tuesday, after which members of the W.O.W. camps at Berlin and this place took charge and escorted the body to the new made grave in the Doxey cemetery and interred it, conducting the beautiful burial rites of the order, of which deceased was a member. Deceased leaves a wife and three children for whom he had the forethought to provide a competence by taking out a Woodmen of the World life insurance policy. (1 Dec 1905, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Rev. Hill Dead. Rev. A. B. Hill, who has been in Sayre for several months, died Monday. He had come here with his family from Mississippi in the hope of benefitting his health, but the grim hand of disease had already too firm a hold, and he became rapidly worse until forced to give up the unequal struggle. He was a minister in the Baptist church, and was made pastor of the church here soon after his coming. He leaves a wife and five children. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon and the burial took place in the Doxey cemetery. The Berlin camp of the Woodmen of the World, of which he was a member, were in attendance, and with the members of the Sayre lodge, buried him with the rites of their order. (5 Jul 1906, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Woodmen Unveiling. The monument erected by the Woodmen of the World, in the Doxey cemetery, to the memory of Rev. A. B. Hill, former pastor of the Baptist church at Sayre, who at his death was a member of the order, was unveiled. At the command of the consul commander the master of ceremonies removed the veil revealing a beautiful monument of steel gray granite over six feet in height, representing a stump resting on a base of two logs, on which was inscribed the name and age of the deceased woodman and the emblems of the order. At the close of the unveiling ceremonies wreaths of flowers, provided by the family and friends of the deceased, were strewn upon the grave. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
