Last month occurred the announcement of the death of little Ella, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Hurford. This is the sad end of an appalling history of this family since May 6, 1906. At this date, Mrs. Hurford had the sad misfortunate of getting her leg broke which took Mr. Hurford from his field labor, later he was stricken with slow fever and lay for six weeks unable to leave his room and still later five of his children, all but the baby, were stricken with the same dreaded disease. Imagine dear reader the condition of this family, six of them with burning fever almost consuming their lives by degrees and a crippled wife and mother unable to care for those so dear to her. It is deplorable to think of their crop untilled and not one of the family able to care for the others or bring a sup of water to cool and quench the thirsting pangs of a burning fever. But thanks to our neighbors and friends in whose hearts charity dwells. The stricken family shall ever cherish in memory a feeling of love and gratitude for those who extended their sympathies not only in expressions of speech but in devotion of brotherly love, gifts of charity and deeds with tender hands for the sick and hardy hands of toil for the farm and elsewhere. But alas it seemed while the death angel had thus been hovering over this home there was finally some hope that he would not be able to ebb one of these dear lives away. He had selected his victim and late in October little Ella a bright-eyed little girl of ten a jewel to any home suffered a relapse and on the 22nd her sweet life was stolen away to dwell in that home beyond where troubles are o'er and peace, happiness and friendship dwells for evermore. While the once strong father is bent with bereavement and the once agile mother now crippled for life is weeping as none but mothers can weep. A host of sympathizing friends join them in this the saddest hours of their lives. A father's care and a mother's prayers no more protect their dear little one but as time rolls by into coming years they'll meet in their eternal home. A Friend. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
