(6 Dec 1906, Greer County Republican, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): DIED. Ex-Postmaster of Mayfield, Okla. Mr. A. S. Mayfield was born June 22, 1846, died December 1, 1906. His parents were natives of Kentucky, but in an early day moved to Jefferson county, Mo., where the deceased was born and reared. He served in the Federal army. He was married twice, his first wife dying. His second wife was Josie R. McGuire to whom he married Oct. 5, 1882, in Pulaski county, Mo., and this union were born seven children - Cora E., Albert S., Amanda M., Lula M., Lenno M., and Mattie E. With this family he came to Oklahoma about six years ago. Mr. Mayfield united with the Baptist church in August 1904. For a year or two he has been complaining of not feeling well, but met with nothing serious until last Saturday afternoon about three o'clock. At this time he was engaged in a friendly conversation with a neighbor, who had stopped his team near Mr. Mayfield's house, and was sitting in his hack while the latter was standing on the ground near by, he was suddenly stricken with a paralytic stroke. He was carried into the house, where he remained conscious until a short time before his death at 8:20 p.m. He leaves a host of mourning relatives and friends who deeply feel the great loss to themselves and community. This community extends its sympathy to the bereft family, and wishes to cluster around them those flowers of encouragement and love that are now too late to be strewn in the path of him who sleeps in that home not made with hands. Funeral services were held at the cemetery near Mayfield on Sunday conducted by Rev. J. R. Montgomery, of the Church of God. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
