McCathern, formerly of this City, died at the home of his son living near Texola on Wednesday, February 6th. He celebrated his 104th birthday the 11th of January. When living in Elk City, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Becky Reed. Mr. McCathern was a devoted christian a member of the M. E. Church South, one who believed heartfelt religion and holiness, was always praising God for being so good to him. He had a wonderful memory. When were talking to him at the time of his 100th birthday, he quoted scripture verses from the Bible, among them many passages where God promised to take care of those who loved Him and obeyed his commandments. He was in several wars, Indian, Mexican and others, and had skirmishes with the Comanche Indians in the early days of Texas and Oklahoma. He felt God's guidance in the wars and those early trials and believed He saved him through them all. It was a privilege to talk to this man of God and made all realize the beauty of christian religion and they who knew him best realized the purity and selfishness of his christian life, realized that he was indeed prepared for the transition from this life to the larger, freer life beyond. (2 Jul 1903, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Sebern S. McCathern, of Sweetwater, made final proof on his claim last Saturday. The old gentleman is 76 years old and came into Roger Mills Co. six years ago and settled upon the claim that he now holds a deed for. He also had four sons who also made final proof at the same time. Himself and near relatives hold sixteen hundred acres of the finest land in southwestern Okla. A few more such men as Mr. McCathern would make Roger Mills county one of the finest farming country's on earth. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
