All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ********************************************************************* MC GOWEN, VIRGINIA (29 Jun 1911, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Died at Erick, Okla., Mrs. Jennie McGowen, aged 59 years, 3 mo. and 16 days, on June the 24th, 1911, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. A. Tuggle, from the effects of an attack of erysipelas. The deceased was long and favorably known in Erick, where she has lived for about 8 years till the time of her death. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church; of which denomination the departed was a consistent member. She leaves seven grown children to mourn her loss, four boys and three girls. J. H. McGowen, who has been engaged in business in Erick for a number of years, W. T. McGowen of the Erick postoffice force, L. H. McGowen of Plainview, Texas, Leonard McGowen, Strawn, Texas, Mrs. C. A. Tuggle, Erick, Mrs. P. A. Maloy, Norman, Okla., and Mrs. Katie May, Gap, Texas. The funeral was largely attended and the community extends to the surviving relatives sincere sympathy in which this paper joins. (29 Jun 1911, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Virginia Cox McGowan (sic) All last week as grandma McGowen lay at the point of death a gloom hung over Erick and the inquiry each day on everyone's lips was "How is grandma this morning." She had been a sufferer for about two months resulting from an attack of erysipelas, although she had in a degree recovered from her first illness she became alarmingly ill the fore part of last week and on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 she peacefully passed away. Four of her children and a number of grandchildren were present when the end came. Virginia Cox was born in Green county, Ala., May 8, 1851, moved to DeLeon county Texas in girlhood and was married at Centre Hill Texas June 1st 1870 to John H. McGowen, and lived in that vicinity until about nine years ago when they moved to Erick, her family being one among the first to settle here. Her husband died at Erick January 18th, 1905. Mrs. McGowen was gloriously converted when she was a girl about 12 years old, joined the Methodist Church at that time and was faithful adherent to that faith until her death. She was especially conspicious for her sweet spirited christianity, always thoughtful for others. She lived a self sacrificing live devoted to her children and grandchildren and although she will be missed most by them her taking away will be felt as a personal bereavement by scores of friends. Although she spent the last six years of her life in widowhood, she was spared the pain of being bereft of any of her children. She is survived by three daughters and four sons, as follows: Mesdames P. A. (Nettie) Maloy of Norman, Okla., Mrs. Zeb (Katie) May of Buffalo, Tex., Mrs. Chas. A. (Lula) Tuggle of Erick, Messers. Lee McGowen of Flomont, Texas, John H. and W. T. McGowen of Erick, and Leonard McGowen of Straun, Texas. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Hollingsworth of Leon county and Mrs. Neely McGowen of Stevens county, Texas. Mrs. Neely McGowen is Grandma "Jennie's" twin sister, also, she is her sister-in-law, being the wife of David McGowen, who is the brother of her husband. Twin sisters having married brothers. Funeral services were held Sunday morning, June 25, at 10 a.m. at the Methodist church at Erick, her pastor, Rev. H. L. Mauldin, conducting the same. All churches of the town dismissed Sunday school service in honor of Mrs. McGowen, and never was a funeral at Erick more largely attended. The post office was draped in honor of her and her son Wm. who is assistant postmaster.
