(22 Feb 1906, Greer County Republican, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. John Motley, whose serious illness was noted in the Republican last week, died at his home at McLean, Tex., last Sunday night. Mr. Motley was formerly an esteemed citizen of Erick and had only recently removed to McLean. (8 Mar 1906, Greer County Republican, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): J. W. Motley Dead. J. W. Motley died at McLean, Tex., Sunday night, Feb. 18, after only a few days illness from pneumonia. Mr. Motley was born in Shelby county, Tenn., Sept. 22, 1836. He professed religion at the age of 40 and had been a member of the Baptist church for thirty years. He served four years with Gen. Joe Wheeler in the Confederate army during the civil strife between the states. His record as a church member, citizen and soldier is wonderful and commendable. He never was prosecuted in court or had a difficulty with a neighbor. He suffered intensely but patiently to the end. Just before he died he lifted his hand and prayed for God to take him up higher. He leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters to mourn his loss on earth. He was buried in the McLean cemetery, and the writer conducted the funeral in the presence of a large congregation of sympathetic friends. J. W.
