(6 Mar 1930, Thursday, Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Brother J. D. Newton was born in Alabama, February 17th, 1867, and departed this life March 1st, 1930, at the age of 63 years, 11 days. He was married to Fada Alice Montgomery, at Landesville, Alabama, April 14th, 1889. To this union were born nine children, only two of whom survive the father. Brother Newton's wife preceeded him in death February 28th, 1916, which was fourteen years ago. The children who survive are John and Linnie, both of Erick. He is also survived by two grand children, Gladys and Irvin Newton, who were very near and dear to his heart during his lifetime. Besides the immediate family he is survived by four brothers, G. W. Newton of Erick; D. E. Newton of Erick; J. M. Newton of Erick; and W. W. Newton of Sagerton, Texas. Also, two sisters, Mrs. A. C. Ellis, Erick and Mrs. Rosie Powell, Arlie, Texas. It was the happy priviledge (sic) of all these brothers and sisters to be with Brother Newton in his last hours on this earth. He was converted and joined the Missionary Baptist church at the old Prospect Baptist Church in Alabama some 45 or 50 years ago. He moved his membership to the First Baptist Church of Erick, when he came to this western country and is one of the Charter members of the church. Deceased was a Christian Gentleman, a fine citizen and a noble and loving father and brother. May the Holy Spirit be the comfort and stay of all this great host of sorrowing loved ones and friends is our prayer. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, Rev. W. A. Roberts, pastor, officiating. The funeral was in charge of Fatheree Undertaking Company. The W.O.W. had charge of the services at the grave.
