(6 Oct 1927, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): FUNERAL SERVICES Funeral services were held over the remains of John W. Philips (sic) at the First Church of Christ Sunday, October 2nd. Bro. Phillips died at his home in Erick Saturday, October 1st. Obituary will appear in next weeks Democrat. --Mr. and Mrs. Edd Phillips of Clinton and Mr. and Mrs. Will Phillips of Carnegie returned to their respective homes Tuesday, having been called to Erick on account of the sickness and death of their father, J. W. Phillips. (13, Oct 1927, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): AGED CITIZEN DIES Jno. W. Phillips died at his home in Erick Saturday night, October 1, after a lingering, feeble and broken in health quite a while, but confined to his bed only a few days before the end came. He was born in Wayne county, Tennessee, March 28, 1855, being at the time of his death, 72 years, 6 months and 4 days of age. Was married to Miss Lucinda Haddock in 1874. To this union 10 children were born, 4 daughters: - Mrs. Hugh Lucas, Mrs. J. E. Roberts, Mrs. Orville Wileman and Mrs. Lee Watson; 6 sons, L. P. Phillips, J. E. Phillips, A. L. Phillips, W. P. Phillips, Jim Phillips, all living in and near Erick, except J. E. of Clinton and W. P. of Carnegie. All were with him in his last illness. (Note: only five sons named). He joined the Christian church in his early married life. His remains were interred in the Erick cemetery following funeral services at the Christian church. Conducted by the pastor M. K. Griffith surrounded by a large gathering of relatives and friends. He was a pioneer settler of Oklahoma, coming to Erick with his wife and children in 1902, settling one and one-half mile southwest of town where he resided until a few months ago buying a home and moving into town. Besides his children he leaves a wife and 25 grand children to mourn his departure.
