(8 Jul 1909, Thursday, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Willis C. Pyle, aged 69 years, died at his home in Erick Tuesday, July 6, at 11 a.m. and was buried in the Erick cemetery the following day. He was a native of Tennessee, moved from that state to Arkansas and from there to Oklahoma, having come to Erick among the first settlers here. He led an upright, consistent Christian life, having been received into the church and baptized by J. A. Minton about 27 years ago. He was always a good citizen, and neighbor, a kind, indulgent husband and father, and was never heard to utter a harmful word against a fellow man. None knew him but to love him. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Jane Pyle, three sons, J. H., J. S., and Riley Pyle, and one daughter, Mrs. J. C. Erwin, all of whom were present to minister to his needs in the final illness. The deceased was a brother of John Pyle, Sr., and Mrs. J. F. Cannon. The funeral services were conducted at the Christian church by Eld. J. A. Minton. The Democrat joins a large circle of friends in extending condolence to the bereaved ones. (9 Jul 1909, Erick Altruist, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): In Memorium of Willis Pyle A gloom rested upon the people of Erick Tuesday morning when the sad intelligence, Uncle Willis Pyle is dead, was whispered about. He died after an illness of several weeks at his home in Erick Tuesday morning and was buried in the Erick Cemetery yesterday about 10 o'clock. Rev. Minton, assisted by Eld. H. E. Stubbs, conducted the funeral services at the Christian church of which denomination Mr. Pyle had for years been a consistent member. He was one among few men who was loved by everybody with whom he came in contact. During the period of his residence at Erick, extending over more than eight years, we believe no person here had ever uttered an uncomplimentary remark concerning Mr. Pyle. He was at all times pleasant, considerate of the feelings of others, unassuming, in short, a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He had been in failing health for several months, but until about 5 weeks ago he was able to be about the streets on pleasant days. Mr. Pyle was born July 22, 1840, in Giles County, Tenn., and at the age of 34 years, he was married to Miss Jane Cannon of Tennessee and they became the parents of nine children. In 1881, together with his family, Mr. Pyle moved to Alabama, and from there in 1892, to Hempstead County, Ark., where he lived until 1901, at which time he came to Erick. Besides his widow, one daughter, Mrs. James Erwin of near Mayfield, and three sons, Joseph S., John H., Riley Pyle, all Erick and numerous more distant relatives survive him, to all of whom the Altruist extends sincere condolence. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
