Rodgers died at Erick Saturday May 24, 1913. During the past several months, Mr. Rodgers had been under constant medical treatment and hopes were entertained that he might, even at his advanced age, regain some of his former vigor, but a few weeks ago he met with a serious accident, falling out of a wagon while re-arranging a load of feed, and since that time his condition had so baffled the skill of local physicians that his devoted children had decided to remove him to a sanitarium in the east, and brought him from his country home near here to the McCreery Hospital at Erick for the purpose of final consultation as to the advisability of removing him to another city. After making a careful examination of Mr. Rodgers' condition, Dr. McCreery advised against him being taken away from the association of his wife and children; realizing that his condition was very serious and that death was near at hand. And on Dr. McCreery's advice the plans for removing him was abandoned and he was made as comfortable as possible at the McCreery Hospital until the time of his death. Mr. Rodgers had been a consistent member of the Baptist Church for more than a half a century and funeral services were conducted in the Erick Baptist Church Sunday May 25, by his pastor, Rev. C. M. Powell. A large number followed the remains to the final resting place in Erick Cemetery. Mr. Rodgers is survived by his widow and five children as follows: Mr. Henry W. Rodgers of Erick, Mrs. Jennie Ashley of Milton, Tex., Mrs. Gus Koerth of Chalk, Tex., and Rufe, Wilber and Lee Rodgers of Erick, besides numerous grandchildren. Although Mr. Rodgers was comparatively a new-comer in this vicinity, having been here only about five years, he was essentially a pioneer Westerner, having came from the old states to Texas in early days where he spent his young manhood. He was a man of sterling integrity, uncompromisingly, for justice and right, under all circumstances. The example of his long and upright life is worthy of emulation. His surviving loved ones have the sincere sympathy of all the people of this vicinity. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
