Stevens, died at the family residence, just at the edge of the little town of St. Vrain, New Mexico, Friday about 3 o'clock in the morning. The remains were brought to Erick for burial, the bereaved husband and mother were joined at Groom, Texas, by Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Landers and Mrs. Alice Riley. The funeral party arrived Saturday on the midnight train and proceeded to the B. H. Armstrong home. Services were conducted by Rev. Ilus Q. McCorkle of the Christian church Sunday at 3 p.m. at the tabernacle and Mrs. Stevens' earthly remains were laid to rest beside those of her revered step-father, the late Joe Armstrong. Mrs. Stevens' maiden name was Henrietta Riley. She was born in Leavanworth, Ind., Oct. 29th, 1859, and was therefore 62 years, 8 months and 12 days old. She was the only daughter of James and Charety Riley and became the wife of John J. Stevens in the year 1882. She was the only sister of the late Will Riley and a half sister of Bert Armstrong of Erick. There was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stevens, many years ago, a little daughter who went to live with the angels after a few short years. A little girl adopted later also died. After this they lavished their love upon "all God's creatures." Mrs. Stevens had been a member of the Christian Church for 25 years and was a Christian in truth, worshipping the Lord in the beauty of holiness. She so lived that she could afford to die whenever the hour came. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
