Ward, one of Erick's pioneer citizens, passed into the Great Beyond Saturday, May 9, 1914. He was born March 12, 1866,m in Abingdon, Va., removing to Greenville, Texas, when he was 21 years of age. On Sept. 7, 1892, he was married to Lenora Horn, at Sherman, Texas. Mr. Ward came to Erick Jan. 1st, 1902 and established the firm of Hamilton, Blake & Ward, General Merchandise, which soon grew to be one of the largest in Western Oklahoma. On account of failing health he closed out the business in January, 1911. Mr. Ward was possessed of an energetic and progressive nature which made him a leader in any field of endeavor. Through his influence and with his help, the First Presbyterian Church was established in Erick. He was always faithful and untiring in its support. He was always found in the front rank when anything pertaining to the interest of Erick was at stake. Many people remember him kindly for the good deeds of friendship he was always ready to do. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Fred, 18 years old and Bartlett, 4 months old; a brother J. K. Ward of Abilene, Texas; a sister, Mrs. J. J. Pennington, of Erick; a brother, Milton Ward of Lancaster, Ky., and his father who lives at Jonesville, Va. He was the youngest of the family and his was the first death in the family for 45 years. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. E. Miller at the residence of Mrs. Horn and at the Presbyterian Church. The services were attended by representatives of the K. P. Lodge, of which he was a member, and a host of friends were present to pay their respects to the memory of the departed one.
