(28 Mar 1907, Thursday, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): After lingering quite a while between life and death the spirit of James A. Whitesides took its flight last Saturday, March 25th, and he passed away as the burning out of a candle. The subject of this sketch was born in Hempstead county, Arkansas, on the 4th day of September 1819 and was 88 years, 6 months and 5 days old at the time of his death. He professed religion at the age of 22 years and joined the M. E. Church South and ever lived the life of a true and devoted Christian. Joined the Masonic lodge in 1863 and was laid to rest in Erick cemetery last Sabbath afternoon by the Masonic fraternity of Erick. He enlisted in the Confederate army the 20th day of March, 1862, and was severely wounded at the battle of Cornith, Miss., Oct. 4th, 1863; and was honorably discharged from service. He left three children to mourn his loss only one of whom was at his bedside, Mrs. R. M. Priddy, at whose residence passed away. One son resides at Mangum and made several visits to see his father while sick, but was not present when the end came, but came up to attend the burial. The other son is a drummer with headquarters at St. Louis. J. A. Whiteside attended the picnic and veterans re-union held here last summer, and when formed into line to be photographed, he was supported by his daughter, being then too feeble to stand. Thus they fall one by one, and the men who followed Lee and Jackson in the '60's will soon be called to "pass over the river and rest under the shade of the trees" with the thousands who have proceded (sic) them. Rest in peace noble veteran.
