(19 May 1921, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): John Leonard Witt, a highly esteemed and respected citizen of Erick, on May 10th, 1921, at his home departed this life very suddenly of heart failure. Bro. Witt was born near Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee, June 29th, 1879. He moved with his parents to Texas in 1880 living there three years. From Texas he went to Arkansas living there four years. Bro. Witt came from Arkansas to what was then known as the Cherokee Nation, now Oklahoma. He settled near Webber Falls. While there his father, Geo. W. Witt, after a very brief illness of two days died July 22nd, 1893. His last request was for all his family to meet him in Heaven. Bro. J. L. Witt was converted at the age of fifteen years while living at Webber Falls, Okla. He connected himself with the Missionary Baptist church of that place. Bro. Witt moved from Webber Falls to Shawnee where he remained until the year 1903 when he came to this part of Oklahoma. On January 31st, 1904, he was married to Miss Carrie E. Tootle. To which union four children were born, Ruby, Raymond, Gladys and Clifton. All of which are now living. Bro. Witt and wife went into the organization of the Buffalo Baptist Church making that their church home until 1916 when they moved to Erick. He and his wife placed their membership with the First Baptist Church of Erick. Their three oldest children have been converted and joined with them. Bro. Witt has proved himself loyal to his Church and faithful to his Christ. As a citizen Bro. Witt was active in all the progressive movements. He was honorable upright and honest and ranked among the best people of our town. He leaves a wife and four children, a mother, four sisters and two brothers and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death. Grandma Witt, mother of the deceased, who lives near Mills, N. M., also the brother and two sisters of the same place were unable to attend the funeral. Mrs. Witt's mother and her sister, Mrs. Langston of Shawnee were present.
