Ermey on Wed, 20 Jan 1999 Surnames: Murphy, Wright A pioneer resident of this section and probably one of the best known residents of the county died at his home, on the farm northwest of the city on Sunday after an illness covering several months. Mr. Murphy suffered an attack of rhematism which left him with heart trouble. Last winter he took the flu and while he was up and able to be around during the spring still, this further aggravated the heart trouble and for some months past he has been in a critical condition and his death did not thus come as a surprise. The funeral services were held at Lone Oak Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday and was conducted by the Sayre Masonic Lodge of which Mr. Murphy had been a member for many years. Interment was in the Lone Oak Cemetery. As a pioneer resident of the section northwest of this city, Mr. Murphy erected the Murphy gin, nine miles northwest and which still bears his name although owned by G.L. Davis(?) at the present time. When Beckham County was organized, Mr. Murphy was elected this county's first county Treasurer and served two terms with entire satisfaction to the people of the county. Bud Murphy, as he was nick-named by his friends was among the best known men of the county, he being of the genial nature which makes and holds the friendship of the vast majority of the American people. In public affairs he proved his honesty, and was highly respected by every man or woman who knew him. Generous and liberal to a fault, there are hundreds of people among the earlier settlers of this section and many among the later arrivals who have received assistance at his hands in their needs, and for us to say....(not finished) _________________________________________________________________ Tom Wesley Newman 1913-1999 Posted by Wayne Montgomery on Thu, 07 Jan 1999 Surnames: NEWMAN, Harris 07 Jan 1999 MODESTO BEE, Modesto, California NEWMAN, TOM W. 28 January 1913 - 3 January 1999 TOM WESLEY NEWMAN, 85, of Turlock, California, died Sunday at Elness Convalescent Hospital. Morgan on Fri, 04 Dec 1998 Surnames: Morgan In a recent letter to Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Hughes, Lt. Burton A. Reeves, former Erick boy, tells of visiting the grave of Billy Wayne Morgan, in Italy. Dear Puddy, Landrum and Family: Hello, folks. Just a line or two, because that's about all you can squeeze on one of these things (V-Mail letter). Perhaps its speed will make the compensations, though. Since I last wrote you, I attended a military funeral at one of the military cemeteries here in Italy, and while there I came across the grave of Billy Wayne Morgan. I thought perhaps the family would like to know, but I didn't know just who to write, so I thought of you. It is a beautiful place, magnificently kept all the time, and it is American soil with "Old Glory" flying over it in all her majesty. After the war if they want his body returned to them in the states, they can arrange for it, or if they want it to remain here it will always be on American soil and will forever be cared for. We talked for some length of time with the Chaplain and the attendants about it. The Chaplain has contacted the family long before, I'm sure, but I did want to send this word in addition to his. Lots of love and God's richest blessings. As ever, Burt [ Beckham County Democrat - October 5, 1944 ] _________________________________________________________________ Staff Sergeant Billy W.
