All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ GILES -- Judge Owen M., died October 11, 2006, at home from congestive heart failure. Born February 28, 1914, in Texola, OK, he moved to Tulsa n 1927, and was graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1932. He entered the University of Chicago on a scholarship, where he earned a B.A. degree, was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and a member of the second graduating class under the "Hutchins New Plan", a forerunner of later "Core" plans. On January 17, 1941, while employed by the Carter Oil Company as an Oil Scout in Oklahoma, he was drafted into the Army at Fort Sill as a Private. After Pearl Harbor, he was selected to be a member of the first class at the then new Army Air Corps Officer Candidate School in Miami Beach, FL. Other military assignments included duty at Air Force Headquarters, Washington, D.C., and Wing Headquarters, Air Transport Command in Africa. In August 1945, he was honorably discharged as a Major. Following World War II, he was graduated with a J.D. degree from the S.M.U. School of Law, where he was a member of the Barristers, an honorary legal society. On December 16, 1947, he was admitted to the Texas Bar. In 1952, he ran successfully for a judgeship to begin a 30 year career in the Dallas County Judiciary, the first ten years as Judge of County Court of Law No.1 and the next twenty years as the Judge of the 68th District Court. Judge Owen Giles was a member of the American, Texas, and Dallas Bar Associations, the University Park United Methodist Church, and a 50-year member of the Tannehill Lodge No. 52. He is survived by: his wife of 51 years, the former, Marjorie Ann White; children, Edward Owen Giles of Dallas, Thomas Alfred Giles and wife, Lourdes Giles of Dayton, OH, and Barbara Giles McDaniel and husband, Thomas J. McDaniel of University Park; grandchildren, John Michael Giles, Emily Nicole Giles, Thomas Randolph McDaniel, and James Matthew McDaniel; and several cousins. Open visitation will be held 9 a.m. - 7 p.m., Sunday, October 15. Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., Monday, October 16, 2006, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel, in Dallas, with Rev. Larry Ravert officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to your favorite charity. Sparkman/Hillcrest, (214) 363-5401.
