She passed away October 16, 2001, in Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 84 years 11 months and 1 day. Veta Fay's family moved from Jack County, Texas to Vernon in 1922 in 2 covered wagons. In 1926 they added a Model T. Ford to the convoy of wagons and moved to Crawford, Oklahoma, where she graduated high school in 1934. She was married to Vern G. Platts at Sayre, Oklahoma on January 7, 1940 in the home of the Methodist Minister who had married Veta's parents. They lived in Borger while awaiting a Phillips house, then they lived in Phillips until 1981 when they moved to Roll, Oklahoma. While living in Phillips, she was an active member of the Republican Women, Tri-City Community Concert Board, Great Books Society and was a girl scout leader. Vern was "farmed out" to other Phillips plants and also contracted to work for other oil companies. This work enabled Vern and Veta Fay to live in Venezuela and Kuwait, as well as, fulfill shorter assignments in Alaska, Kansas, Montana, and Utah. In route to these, Vern and Veta Fay were privileged to see much of the world. She was a member of St. Andred United Methodist Church in Broger, TX and attended Red Star Brethren in Christ Church in Leddey. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, R.E. Smith, one half brother, Everett Beaver and one half sister, Effie Stewart. Services were held October 18, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Red Star Brethren in Christ Church, officiated by Stan Norman and Dave McGarvey. Burial was at the Silen Home Cemetery, Roll, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Vernell and Tex Toney of Borger, TX, Vicki and Steve St. Clair of Durham, OK; grandchildren, Erin and Bryan Booher of Ft. Worth, TX, Jenny Acker and Angie Acker of Norman, OK; three brothers, Melvin Smith of Columbus, Ohio, Cecil Smith of Elk City, OK, Jackiedean Smith of Borger, TX; two sisters, Wanda Binkley of phoenix, Arizona, Imogene Wilcox of Borger, TX; many adoring nieces and nephews, hos of relatives and friends.
