All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ ANDERSON, MATTIE JOHNSON (29 Nov 1930, Unidentified Beckham Co Newspaper, Beckham Co, OK): County officials of several communities paid final tribute this afternoon to Mrs. Mattie Johnson Anderson, wife of A. W. Anderson, and prominent civic and political worker, at the family residence north of Doxey. Rites were read at 2:30 o'clock in the home by Rev. A. J. Bradshaw, pastor of the First Christian church at Sayre. Mrs. Anderson died at home Thursday evening after an illness of several weeks. She became ill a year ago and was brought to a city hospital where she recovered sufficiently to return to her residence and resume many of her activities in public affairs. During the past summer Mrs. Anderson was a member of the precinct election board in her community and helped direct both primary elections. She was active in the Democratic party, having been vice-chairman of the county organization and delegate to state conventions many times. Social Leader. Mrs. Anderson was active in social and community life in the county since she moved with Mr. Anderson and their son to Doxey in 1919. They came to Beckham county from Clinton. She was a charter member of the Clinton Delphian chapter, transfering (sic) her membership to the Sayre chapter when she changed her residence. She has held many offices in federated club work in the state, and was a charter member in the Mildred Lee chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy of Sayre. Through her efforts the Sayre Sorosis club was organized in 1926. She served as its first president, and lent her aid and influence to its activities until a year ago when she had to give up active club work. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Clinton Eastern Star chapter and a member of the Christian church. She was a graduate of the Sam Houston Normal school at Huntsville, Texas, and was a teacher in her early years. Surviving Mrs. Anderson are her husband, A. W. Anderson and one son, Robert. She has one brother and two sisters and a number of other relatives. Interment was made in the Doxey-Sayre cemetery, Killough-Hullum, funeral directors were in charge of arrangements.
