All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ BASHAM, NANCY CAROLINE (18 Aug 1921, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Nancy Caroline Stacks was born December 26, 2849 (sic), in Illinois, and when a child of three moved with her parents to Texas, where she grew to womanhood. When a girl of 18 she was married to Charley Kelley, who lived only two years. On July 31, 1873, she was married to J. E. Basham, and to them were born six children. In May, 1890, they moved to a farm near Lexington in the eastern part of Oklahoma. There Mr. Basham died June 16, 1900. Left a widow again, Mrs. Basham stayed on the farm with her children until 1907, when she moved to this community. She was converted when a girl and joined the Christian church, and in later years she joined the Methodist church, in which she tried to live a true life. On May 11, 1918, she had a stroke of paralysis and from that time on she was never well. During the last four weeks her suffering was intense but she never complained, and on August 4, 1921, God released her from her pain, death coming to her at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. H. Blackburn, north of this city. She leaves five children to mourn the loss of a dear mother, Mrs. Etta Vivian, Clovis, New Mexico; J. L. Basham, Talala, Oklahoma, Mrs. G. H. Blackburn, Mrs. M. J. Carnahan and Mrs. Dovie Hargrove, of this city. She also leaves 21 grandchildren, one great grandchild, and two boys who were as near to her as her own, Harvey Hastings, a nephew, and Arthur Daves, a grandson, who were raised by her. She was laid to rest at the Lone Oak Cemetery, August 5, Rev. J. L. Davis preaching the funeral sermon at the Lone Oak church.
